Formative and summative assessments are needed to measure
students learning outcomes. Formative assessment is a constantly occurring
process that is not a single tool but a series of events in action. Formative assessment
requires students to take responsibility for their own learning and helps communicate
clear, specific learning goals. It focusses on goals that represent valuable
educational outcomes that identify students’ current knowledge and skills necessary
foe reaching desired goals. Students are encouraged to self-monitor progress
including peer assessment and feedback. Summative assessment will be given at
the end of the unit whether it be a midterm exam, final project, final group project,
or final paper.
The CCSS encourage teachers to engage students in reading at
least some texts that they are likely to struggle with in terms of fluency and
reading comprehension. It is important that the interactions with these
difficult texts lead to maximum student learning, and as teachers, it is up to
us to provide significantly greater and more skillful instruction and support. This
support can be applied through rereading, explanation, and encouragement.
